motion plastics for vertical farming

Producing foodstuffs is becoming more and more challenging. This is not surprising, considering there are currently 7.8 billion people on earth, with an annual growth rate of more than 80 million people. Furthermore, over half of the world's population is drawn to big cities - and everybody needs to be provided with food, such as fruit and vegetables. With the rise of mega-cities and ever-larger metropolises, the question arises of new sustainable ways of food production that enable large cities to be more self-sufficient and conserve resources. One such new way is vertical farming (also called indoor farming), farming on a vertical level indoors. The limited space available in urban areas, which hardly allows for conventional arable land and conventional agriculture, is moved vertically, high transport costs and CO² emissions are avoided and the greatest possible economic benefit is generated.
The machines used in vertical farming usually work in a highly sensitive environment, and the demands on the components installed are correspondingly high. With its wide range of maintenance-free products, igus ensures a reliable operation. By dispensing with external lubricants, low-abrasion and FDA-compliant materials and the highest hygiene standards, contamination of the crops is prevented. In addition, our motion plastics score points with their resistance to corrosion and dirt. Our Low Cost Automation systems enable cost-effective farming throughout the year and a fast return on investment.
